Tamika Catchings and USA Basketball on the Road to Gold

Tamika Catchings won a gold in 2004. She likes wearing red white and blue, and the reward of ruling on the court.

“To be able to have the opportunity to come over here and participate in the Olympics is like a dream. Not many people can say they participate in the Olympics and win a gold medal. I have one but I want two. I guess that’s greedy but hey, it is what it is. You come this far, you want to go home with the gold.”

The USA women are undefeated so far in the Beijing Olympics. They take on Korea Tuesday night.

Tamika Catchings Cleard to Play

Tamika Catchings - Indiana Fever

Five-time WNBA All-Star and U.S. Olympic gold medalist Tamika Catchings underwent MRI tests Thursday morning following an injury to her right heel in Wednesday’s 81-77 loss to the Atlanta Dream. Test results were negative, indicating only a bruise, with no further damage or injury to the Achilles’ tendon that was surgically repaired on Sept. 6, 2007.

Cleared to play again as pain permits, Catchings is listed as questionable for Friday’s game vs. Seattle. She did not practice with the team on Thursday.

Catchings was kicked in the right heel with 6:46 remaining in yesterday’s game, and did not return to the court after the injury. She was evaluated Thursday for a possible strain to the right Achilles’ tendon. She received test results early Thursday evening while meeting with Dr. Dan Lehman, the same doctor that performed her surgery in September.

After nine months of rehabilitation, Catchings returned to the Fever lineup on June 15, 2008. She has appeared in 12 games this season, offering her best performance during Wednesday’s loss, leading Indiana with 18 points, 12 rebounds, five assists, four steals and a blocked shot.

She was named to the U.S. Olympic Women’s Basketball Team on July 10, and looks forward to competing in the upcoming Olympics in Beijing, China.

Katie Douglas Leads the Fever to a Win Over Chicago Sky

Katie Douglas led the Fever to a win over the Chicago Sky with 25 points Saturday night, 66-57.

Douglas scored 13 of her 25 points in the 4th quarter, hitting 7-of-17 from the field.

“All of us made more of a conscious effort to get to the rim,” Douglas said. “We got off to a phenomenal start, but in the second half, things were not going down as well. Rather that sit in and try to get comfortable, we decided to attack the basket.”

Tan White scored 8 of her total 10 points in the first quarter.

The Fever got off to a good start making their first 9 baskets. They soon cooled off but Douglas went to work and the Fever ended the half 32-27.

In the second half, Douglas went 10-for-10 from the free throw line and scored all but 10 of Indiana’s 4th quarter points. The Fever held on for the win, 66-57.

“Give Chicago credit,” said Douglas. “They’re well balanced, relentless and aggressive. Also give us credit for finding our composure, putting the ball in the basket more than they did and making more stops than they did.”
